Snow. The sky was falling with it. It’s white powder plundering down upon the land and it’s unsuspecting prey. The ground rumbled and shook, unsettling even the most sure-footed of creatures. Panic soon struck the hearts of many as they tried to flee from Mother Nature’s fury. For what reason had caused her to become upset would forever be questioned upon. Sometimes there were no right or wrong answers, and well, Mother Nature can do whatever the heck she wanted. There was nothing much that we as the Equine race could do to stop or sway with her decision making. Our best way to survival was to grin and bear with whatever she decided to throw at us. Some were more capable of adjusting to her rules than others. The strong remained while the weak usually faded into the distance like some far away memory. I was lucky to be still standing here today. My mind washed into a blur as the snow wrapped itself around my darkened pelt. The avalanche had swept me off my feet and carried me far away from everyone that I’ve known within the lands of the Windriver Valley.
A rock hidden amongst the tumbling of snow ricocheted itself off the top of my crown. Thus causing their names and faces to be forgotten. Along with my memory taking a hit I had lost my eyesight and all consciousness of which the world was spinning out of control around me. Lady Luck seemed to fancy me that day, for when all that was said and done with and everything still again no blood had been taken from my hide. No broken limbs, bruised ribs, and a nice egg shaped lump up top my head was all that I managed to wake up to. Unaware of how much time had passed me by I was stuck in a haze, lost within my own head. Tending to my roughed up appearance and insides I remained alone. During my solitude glimpses of faces randomly appeared before my eyes, but nothing was making sense or connecting to the next dot for me to remember who they were and how I’ve come to know them. My heart was missing something, but I was too confused and stuck in my thoughts to listen to its struggle. Perhaps this was for my own good? Mother Nature’s way of handing me a second chance to start anew.
Figuring that I had nothing left to tie me down I had decided to leave the lands. The lands I had called home for a short while, it was time to stretch my legs and to see what else Lady Luck and Mother Nature had in store for me. My mood was not joyous and carefree nor troubled and brewing, it was calm with a tinge of uneasiness. With the unknown terrain before me I had set out to make this chance something worth while, to make a name for myself, and to establish new memories of which would not be forgotten. With another year of traveling and living by myself under my belt, the determination to find my place in this world was what fed fuel to my veins to keep me moving. Hope and doubt intertwined as each new location held no appeal to my warm chocolate eyes. My stride even, following the breeze, taking flight in a new direction as it changed its course. Slowing my speed as the scent of various equine came across my nose. A smile found its way upon my lips as I left the breeze, abandoning my solitary ways. Something within me craved for a connection with others like me, so no longer would I deprive myself of such attention.
Weaving through a thick forest of evergreens and shrubbery, kicking the new Winter’s snow behind me I could picture myself leading quite the herd. The title of Neutral Alpha hanging upon my withers, a great responsibility to carry. One that I would have a firm grip upon as such a ranking would need to have. My heart and mind working together instead of swaying my opinions one way or toward another. Such a title would do me some good. Perhaps this was what I was given the second chance for? To put my strength and willpower to some use, to mend what once was broken? Another smile began to tug at my lips as I looked around at my surroundings some more. The forest thinning, revealing an open meadow covered beneath Winter’s snowy blanket. Halting for a moment I closed my eyes. The breeze calling my name. My racing lineage urging me to take flight, disrupting the powdery fluff some more. Coming across no threatening scents I reopened my eyes. A single breath was released back into the air before I kicked up my heels and took off full speed across the meadow. The rush of a fresh start warmed my bones. Coming to a stop before the river’s banks, the smile still planted firmly upon my features. Narres flared as I caught my breath. It felt good to start life over again.
